In the Cape Chestnut flowering season the forests around Mt. Kenya are splashed with colour from the profuse pink blossoms. This beautiful indigenous forest tree derives its name from the knobbly pods which resemble the European chestnut. The seeds contain a healing oil traditionally used by Kikuyu herbalists to treat skin ailments.
The collectors are usually landless squatters who live around these community forests. Fair prices are paid on delivery of these seeds which helps in poverty alleviation.
